Can I pay my tolls with cash?

Yes. You can pay your toll with cash on the 73, 241, 133 and 261 Toll Roads. Not all toll booths are staffed so be prepared to pay with exact change at automatic coin machines. Automatic coin machines accept $1.00 coins, 50 cents coins, quarters, dimes and nickels. No pennies or bills please. Most machines require you to get coin change first, then place the coins into the basket to pay the toll. Some machines accept $1, $5, $10 and $20 bills and will deduct the toll automatically.

How do the change machines located at some of the toll plazas work?

Select locations are equipped with change machines which take bills up to $10 and return Susan B. Anthony or golden dollar coins. On most machines you must remove the dollar coins from the change machine and then place them in the automatic coin machine basket in order to pay the toll. Other machines will accept bills, deduct the toll, and make change in one step.

Do the automatic change machines take dollar coins?

Yes, the automatic coin machines accept both Susan B. Anthony and golden dollar coins.

Do I need exact change on The Toll Roads?

At mainline toll plazas that are manned by a toll attendant, you can pay the toll with coins or bills up to $20. You will need exact change at most ramp plazas. Ramp tolls vary from $0.50 to $2.00.

Some ramps are equipped with bill-changer machines where you can get coin change for $1 and $5 bills. If you exchange your bills for coins, you will need to put the exact amount of change in the toll collection basket.

There are a few machines at the Tomato Springs mainline toll plaza on the 241 Toll Road that will accept change for paper bills and then automatically deduct the toll in one step.

Once the toll is paid, you will see a green light that signals you to drive through.

What if I do not have exact change and drive through?

You will receive a Notice of Toll Evasion (also called a toll violation) in the mail within two weeks. Improper payment of each toll incurs a $47.50 processing fee, plus the toll amount.

You can contest the violation:

  • By filling out the dispute section on the back of the evasion notice
  • Call the Violations Department at 949-727-4800.

If you do not have previous violations, the violation notice will include an offer to open a FasTrak account. FasTrak is a convenient way to pay your tolls electronically. When opening a FasTrak account, you establish a prepaid account from which tolls can be deducted. We will apply $15 of the violation processing fee to your prepaid balance if you choose to open an account. If you prefer not to open an account, you can simply mail in the $47.50 processing fee and the toll amount upon receipt of the violation notice.
